Home-Start Brent is a registered charity established in January 1996 and has achieved incorporation during 2005.
The first Home-Start scheme was established in Leicester in 1973 by Margaret Harrison a parent and visionary. Having listened to parents and volunteers with whom she worked and Social Services, she came up with a simple idea. Ordinary people, particularly parents have a fund of experiences, skills, knowledge and qualities of kindness, hope, caring and a sense of fun.
These parents, with preparation and continuing support, would then be able to befriend other parents going through stressful situations and offer them one to one support in their homes.
Thirty years on, there are over 340 Home-Start schemes throughout the UK and another 65+ world wide in such countries as Kenya, Russia and Sri Lanka. Our central office, Home-Start National is based in Leicester and our overseas office, Home-Start International is based in London. Each respectively offer training, information and guidance to their relevant schemes and ensure consistent and quality support for parents and children.
Each scheme, like ours at Home-Start Brent, is an independent community based charity. Each scheme, signs a formal agreement with Central Office, to ensure that they will follow the standards and methods in the Policy & Practice Guide.
The Management Committee of Home-Start Brent is made up of members from the community in the fields of health, social services & the legal profession. The Management Committee members are all volunteers.
