Parenting

To access our service, families either self refer or are Referred by different agencies in Brent e.g. Health, Social Services, Education, faith communities, other voluntary organisations. The agencies must inform the families that they are making a referral to Home-Start Brent.

Please Contact Us to receive our referral forms which must be returned by post.

Once we receive the completed referral form, we will contact and visit the family within two weeks. Following our initial assessment, families are then allocated for Home Visiting or Group support.

Home Visiting One-to-one support

Home Visiting is our core service provided by our Home Visiting Volunteers and can last for a maximum of one year.

The families we assist come from a wide variety of backgrounds from all wards in Brent and cover the age spectrum from 14 years to 40+ . The parents are in need of support for many different reasons e.g. postnatal illness, isolation, relationship problems, poverty, disability, single parenthood, coping with multiple births or several young children. Some parents find these pressure quite overwhelming and may need a sympathetic ear, encouragement and practical help.

Group Programme - Group support

Our group programme - better known as our Family Life Skills programme - provides group support in a safe environment. Parents meet for a number of sessions each term for up to one year. One term focuses on Parenting Skills issues that the parents want to discuss e.g. house rules for all the family, speaking and listening, taking care of yourself.

The remaining two terms focuses on a range of life skills and themes proposed by the parents e.g. understanding depression, healthy eating, keep fit, home safety, antisocial behaviour etc.
