Children

Children

It takes a whole village to raise a child” (Old African Proverb)

Providing a child with a secure and loving environment in which he/she can develop his/her emotional, intellectual, mental and physical faculties carries with it a great deal of responsibility. Unfortunately many western societies tend to believe that families are self-contained units that should carry this responsibility all on their own.

Few would deny that raising children can be difficult. When they are very young they are in the process of exploring and discovering the world around them that sometimes put them in danger, and so they need to be closely supervised.

As they become older and their thinking processes become more developed they question and challenge, continually testing the boundaries in order to better understand themselves and those around them. Children can be very demanding and their emotional, physical and intellectual needs seem never-ending.

If their needs are not met, they can display all sorts of negative behaviours such as aggression, anxiety, attention-seeking or withdrawal. This of course creates stress for those parents who either have additional demands on their time such as other children, or work outside the home or, it can add to the already crippling pressures of unemployment, poverty, poor housing and/or poor health.
